DESCRIPTION:
The Artists’ Colony B & B, run by owners Robert and Susan, snuggles into the historic heart of the little south-eastern Free State village of Smithfield. Quaint, cosy, colourful this Karoo-style guesthouse has all the character and charm of 160 years of South African Platteland heritage. Classified as a National monument, complete with its original yellow-wood ceilings, oregon floorboards, wooden door-frames and sash windows, it is a fine example of the simplicity of the typical Karoo style of the time.
Accommodation
Five non-smoking rooms with private entrance: three queens, with en-suite bath and shower and two twins, one with en-suite bath and shower, one with en-suite shower. For your comfort, cool off in the summer heat with air conditioning and fans. Snuggle down warmly in winter with heating and electric blankets. Each room also has its own fridge, hair-dryer and tea and coffee facilities (plus home-made rusks!).
Enjoy modern comforts in this historic setting - each room with its own quirky style and eclectic décor. Stop over and experience the delightful charm of true 1848 heritage accommodation!
Breakfast and Dining
A delicious full English style breakfast is included. Owner-chefs at nearby local restaurants offer delicious menus ranging from snacks to fine country cuisine.

Activities and Attractions
Enjoy the variety of village activities offered by Smithfield - bowls, tennis, walking / hiking, nine hole golf course, mountain biking, birding and game viewing. Tour an exciting art and craft route. Visit artists’ studios and galleries with a little antique bric-a-brac and pottery thrown in! For ‘foodies’, Smithfield is the home of Ovis Angelica – sheep milks cheeses sold locally and in deli’s all over the country. A visit to our museum is of great historical interest.
Location
Smithfield is ideally situated on the Friendly N6 some 135kms south of Bloemfontein heading for East London. It has the added advantage of being literally at the crossroads for travellers moving between Johannesburg and the Eastern Cape’s “ Wild and Sunshine Coasts” as well as between Durban and Cape Town on the scenic Eastern Free State route (including Golden Gate). In fact, ours is the perfect “Halfway Stop-over” in the very heartland of South Africa.
Smithfield
Smithfield, established in 1848, is the third oldest town in the Free State and was named after Sir Harry Smith, Governor of the Cape at the time. It was initially a frontier town and ‘Ou Grietjie’ the famous canon used during the three Basuto wars, now occupies a prominent position in our museum.
The Caledon River Museum also houses information and exhibits of historic figures such as General Christiaan de Wet, one of the most famous of the Boer leaders during the Anglo-Boer War, and President Hoffman, first President of the Orange Free State. Centre of a large sheep farming community, the town itself is today as well known for the warm welcome it offers tourists.
Robert and Susan share with their guests a warmth and enthusiasm for the spacious and unspoilt landscape with its many years of history to explore and enjoy. |
