DESCRIPTION:
Malutizicht Lodge is an ideal picturesque getaway, centrally situated in the Eastern Free State, midway between the towns of Ficksburg and Fouriesburg on the R26 and within easy distance to Lesotho, Golden Gate and Clarens.
ACCOMMODATION
AA Recommended, 4 star grading, high quality standard of excellence which consists of 9 double en-suite bedrooms in two separate houses. Each house has an open fireplace in the lounge for which wood is supplied. There are wall mounted panel heaters and under carpet heating. Accommodation is fully equipped, strictly self catering and fully serviced on a daily basis.
AMENITIES
Malutizicht Lodge is ideal for large family gatherings and celebrations. There is a recreation area available to both houses which includes an indoor pool heated to 28 degrees in summer and 26 degrees in winter, a bar area with fridge and dart board, tables and chairs. Adjacent to this is an outdoor braai area for which wood is supplied. Each house also has a Weber braai.
Guests may pick their own fruit, in season from our 185 tree fruit orchard.
There is a wide range of fauna and flora on the property with game such as Duiker, Grey Rhebok and Steenbok. Large birds such as Goliath Heron, Secretary bird, Bald Ibis, Jackal Buzzard and African Harrier Hawk (Gymnogene) occur on the property and colourful species such as African Hoopoe, Crested Barbet and Malachite sunbird can be seen around the houses. There are also flocks of Guinea fowl, Francolin and various waterfowl. In the indigenous forest on the way to the ‘picnic spot’, there are a variety of trees such as White Stinkwood, Wild Fig, Wild Olive etc. Wild flowers on the mountainside include Proteas, Aloes and Watsonias.
In nearby Ficksburg, you have access to banking facilities, Internet Café, restaurants including the “White Mischief” floating restaurant.
ACTIVITIES
Hiking
Hiking anywhere on the property is permitted. There are three marked walks on the property: 1 – The Picnic Spot Walk – complete walk takes about 1 hour. 2 – The Rock Art Walk – takes 1½ hours and 3 – The Baboonskop Walk – takes 1½ hours – challenging. Walk/ride to the original graveyard and ‘hartbeeshuisie”.
Mountain Biking
The roads on the property are suitable for mountain biking and there are three district roads near the entrance which offer superb scenery and virtually no traffic.
4 x 4 Driving
There are no extreme tracks on the farm but there are several roads suitable for exploring the property which are suitable for 4 x 4 or high clearance vehicles. Being close to both the Caledonspoort (Fouriesburg) and Ficksburg border posts into Lesotho, day drives can be undertaken to Oxbow and the Afriski resort and Katse dam respectively. (Passports required).
Fishing
The lodge has three fishing dams: one which has trout only, where catch and release can be practiced from June to September or catch and keep throughout the year at a cost per fish taken. The other dams have trout, bass and carp and bass and carp respectively. The dams have abundant bird life, many birds roosting in the trees and reeds in the evenings.
Art
The scenery and sandstone architecture of the Eastern Free State lends itself to painting and photography. Art courses and workshops are held from time to time at the lodge with well known artists/teachers. Visits to the popular artists’ mecca of nearby Clarens are recommended.
Sport
There is an 18 hole golf course, bowling greens and a horse riding centre in Ficksburg where visitors are welcome. Ficksburg also boasts an airport with a 1,4km tar runway and night landing lights. Flips over Lesotho can be arranged.
